Italian Assistant Teachers

The Western Australian Association of Teachers of Italian (WAATI) is a not-for-profit association that has brought together teachers of Italian as a second language in Western Australia for more than forty years.

WAATI aims to provide a shared voice for the large community of teachers of Italian working in primary and secondary schools and tertiary institutions across Western Australia.

WAATI works to:

• facilitate communication and cooperation among teachers of Italian;
• give its members access to the latest teaching methods;
• organise activities, events, seminars and courses that promote and support the teaching and use of Italian in schools across Western Australia.

The programme is open to students and recent graduates who graduated no more than 12 months before applying, are under 30 years of age and belong to one of the following Faculties:

• Linguistic Sciences
• Education
• Arts and Philosophy

No specific language qualification is required, but applicants must have an excellent command of written and spoken English.
 

Required activities

Selected candidates will be expected to:

• offer new perspectives on contemporary Italian culture and trends;
• mark assignments and provide written feedback;
• tutor small groups of students;
• create multimedia presentations;
• develop teaching resources;
• prepare assessments for students;
• record spoken conversations.

Selected assistants are encouraged to approach the experience with an open mind and a willingness to engage with a range of teaching methods and educational approaches that may differ from those encountered during their studies and previous experience. 

No salary or reimbursement of expenses is provided for these activities.

Schools

Participating schools are located in Western Australia, mainly in the Perth metropolitan area. They include private schools, both religious and non-denominational, and independent state schools.

Working hours

Assistants work a total of 20 hours per week, normally over four working days with three days off.

Certificate of participation

At the end of the experience, participants will receive a certificate of participation signed by the Consul of Italy in Western Australia, the President of WAATI and the Programme Coordinator.

Costs

• Application fee: a non-refundable charge of €35, payable when applying for the programme.
• Host family fee: €200 per month, for a total of €600. Participants attending in person must pay this directly to WAATI after confirming their participation. The full amount is paid to the host family.
• Return travel costs.

The number of available places varies depending on the period, the availability of host families, and the schools.

After applications close, Cattolica International will forward eligible applications to WAATI.

WAATI will carry out the selection process based on the following criteria:

• Previous experience
• Specific requirements of the school in question
• English language level.

Selected students must confirm their participation within five days. If a student declines the offer or does not confirm within the deadline, WAATI may contact a reserve candidate.

Participants will receive the name of their host school and the teacher’s contact details (email address) once they have confirmed their participation, approximately two months before the start of the programme.

If this is your first international experience during your current degree programme, upon return you will automatically be awarded 1 additional ECTS credit for international activities.

It is also possible to have the experience recognized as a curricular internship!

To verify the actual possibility of recognition and the specific requirements to be met, you will need to contact your Faculty Internship Tutor. The names, contact details, and office hours of the Internship Tutors are available on your degree programme webpage, under the section “Activities and Experiences / Internships and Placements”.

Once WAATI has confirmed the name of the school and the assigned tasks, you must inform your designated tutor. After receiving approval, you can proceed with the activation of the internship on the Stage and Placement Portal (STeP – https://step.unicatt.it/) by following the activation guidelines.

Candidates selected for the in-person option must purchase the Student Safety Package, which includes insurance cover and an emergency app. The activation cost is €75.

The insurance, provided in partnership with AXA, includes:

• travel insurance;
• health insurance;
• third-party liability insurance;
• workplace accident insurance.

Cover begins seven days before the programme starts and ends seven days after it finishes.

All students taking part in a Cattolica International mobility programme must also:

•  register on the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation website;
•  monitor the international situation through the Ministry’s official channels, particularly the Viaggiare Sicuri website.
