Faculty of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences at Cattolica's SMEA (Alta Scuola in Economia Agro-alimentare) & Wageningen University (WU)

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore's Faculty of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences at SMEA (Alta Scuola in Economia Agro-alimentare) gives participants of the Master of Science in Agricultural and Food Economics the opportunity to undertake the second year of their course at Wageningen University, Netherlands and receive both degrees:

The Double Degree Programme is called Sustainable Agri-Food Economics and Business SAFEB.

The aim of the Double Degree is to pursue the objectives of the two courses, which are both targeted to prepare professionals for the agricultural and food sector, giving students a stronger international background. Students will spend their second year at WU. Students will depart during the second half of August of the academic year 2024/25.

There are 3 places for the academic year 2024/2025.

Students in the first year of the M.Sc. in Agricultural and Food Economics that are interested in the Double Degree Programme have to complete the online application from February 28 to March 18 2024 and pay the application fee of 35 euros (non refundable).

For admission to the Double Degree Programme students must meet the following requirements:

  • They have completed a B.Sc. programme that includes courses in Busines Studies, Consumer Studies or Economics or equivalent and a min. grade of 101/110.
  • One (1) year of Master-level courses with an average grade of 27/30.
  • Their knowledge and use of English is of a sufficient level for them to follow courses delivered in English.
    Acepted language tests and minimum sccores (as published online):
    • TOEFL overall score of at least 92 (with a minimum sub-score of 23 for speaking);
    • IELTS 6.5 (with 6.0 or above for speaking);
    • Cambridge CAE/C1 Advanced: score between 176-210 or Grade C;
    • Cambridge CPE/C2 Proficiency: score between 180-230 or Grade C;
    • RATEr: pass.

A board appointed by the Faculty will select the students based on merit and the basis of the study curriculum. The list of admitted students will be based on:

  • The average mark (weight 45%)
  • CFU reached (weight 45%)
  • Academic motivation (weight 10%)

The admission to the programme will be confirmed only if the students complete the first year of the M.Sc. in Agricultural and Food Economics with an average grade of 27/30.

Students may take any of the following 5 specialisations of the MME programme, provided that the study coordinator in Wageningen approves the student study programme:

  • Sustainable Business and Innovation
  • Supply Chain Analytics
  • Consumer Studies
  • Economics of Sustainability
  • Governance of Sustainability Transformations

In order to complete their programme, Cattolica students have to spend at least 14 months at WU.

Please note that for the specialisations of Consumer Studies and Governance of Sustainability Transformations the completion would typically not fit within 14 months.

A jointly supervised thesis of 30 ECTS has to be performed in order to obtain the degrees at both partner Universities.

Students participating in the programme write their Final Thesis  with a main supervisor from Wageningen University and a supervisor at Cattolica. The research areas have to be agreed with the local study coordinator. The defence takes place at WU. However, students will have to follow the Cattolica procedure to register for a Cattolica official Graduation day for the official proclamation (i.e. in terms of steps, deadlines and fees).

Double Degree students will have to enrol directly to the Master of Science in Management, Economics and Consumer Studies. Consequently, students will have to pay tuitions at both universities:

  1. they will continue to pay tuitions at Università Cattolica and
  2. they will be asked to pay the full WUR tuition fee of about 2,500 Euros per year for students with an EU citizenship, plus an additional monthly fee for any additional month after the first year at Wageningen.

There are three scholarships of € 1,500 each.

Expenses for insurance, travel, and living costs in the host country will be the responsibility of the participating student.

Students involved in the programme will benefit from the standard Erasmus Exchange scholarships for the period they spend abroad. Scholarships will be confirmed during the month of July 2024.

Students will get information about the procedure to follow in order to apply for the Erasmus+ scholarship. The following documents could be requested:

  • ISEE Universitario
  • Receipts of payment (e.g. accommodation, transports, flights, ecc.)
  • Online Learning Agreement, duly filled in with courses attended
  • Statement Period of Study, duly filled in (instructions will be provided)

Selected students will benefit from the health insurance provided by AXA in collaboration with Cattolica. In addition, the “Student Safety Package” will be activated, and students will be able to download the “Safety Check Students” app for the geolocation and instant communications in case of emergency. More information about the activation procedure will be provided to the selected students.
