Italian Assistant teacher – WAATI Western Australia

Cattolica International, in collaboration with the Western Australia Association of Teachers of Italian (WAATI), offers students the opportunity to apply for the position of Italian Language Assistant at primary, middle and high schools across the Perth district (Western Australia).

Selected students will support Italian language teachers in classroom activities. The role may be performed in person or remotely.

The Western Australian Association of Teachers of Italian (WAATI) is a non-profit organisation that, for over forty years, has brought together teachers of Italian as a second language in Western Australia.

WAATI’s mission is to provide a common voice for the large community of Italian language teachers working in primary schools, secondary schools, and tertiary institutions across Western Australia.

WAATI’s main tasks are to:

  • facilitate communication and cooperation among Italian language teachers;
  • provide its members with access to the latest teaching methodologies;
  • organise activities, events, seminars, and courses aimed at promoting, strengthening, and supporting the teaching of Italian in schools throughout Western Australia.

The programme is open to students and recent graduates (within 12 months of graduation) under the age of 30 from the Faculties of:

  • Linguistic Sciences
  • Education 
  • Arts and Philosophy

No specific language certificate is required; however you do need to have a high level of written and spoken English.

Activities
Selected candidates will be asked to:

  • offer new perspectives and trends in Italian culture; 
  • correct student assignments, providing written feedback; 
  • provide tutoring to small groups of students; 
  • create multimedia presentations; 
  • develop educational resources; 
  • prepare tests for students; 
  • record spoken conversations.


Workload
The activities require a total commitment of of 20 hours per week (normally consisting of four working days and three rest days).
 

Final certification
A certificate of participation will be issued at the end of the period in post.
 

Financial conditions
No salary or reimbursement are provided.

The WAATI Association provides food and accommodation with a host family for participants undertaking the programme in person.

Participants in the programme will be responsible for: 

  • Flights
  • Visa fees (Working Holiday visa or Visa for tourism)
  • Personal expenses while abroad.

After applications close, Cattolica International will forward eligible applications to WAATI.

WAATI will carry out the selection process based on the following criteria:

  • Previous experience
  • Specific requirements of the school in question
  • English language level.

Selected students must confirm their participation within five days. If a student declines the offer or does not confirm within the deadline, WAATI may contact a reserve candidate.

Participants will receive the name of their host school and the teacher’s contact details (email address) once they have confirmed their participation, approximately two months before the start of the programme.

If this is your first international experience during your current degree programme, upon return you will automatically be awarded 1 additional ECTS credit for international activities.

It is also possible to have the experience recognized as a curricular internship!
To verify the actual possibility of recognition and the specific requirements to be met, you will need to contact your Faculty Internship Tutor. The names, contact details, and office hours of the Internship Tutors are available on your degree programme webpage, under the section “Activities and Experiences / Internships and Placements”.

Once WAATI has confirmed the name of the school and the assigned tasks, you must inform your designated tutor. After receiving approval, you can proceed with the activation of the internship on the Stage and Placement Portal (STeP – https://step.unicatt.it/) by following the activation guidelines.

Selected students must take out the "Student Safety Package" which includes insurance cover and an emergency app. The cost for this is €75. 

In addition, all students on Cattolica International mobility programmes are required to:

  • register on the Farnesina website
  • keep up to date on the international situation via official channels of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in particular refer to the Safe Travel site for information about any provisions in force for entry into the country where the programme will be carried out.
