The offer is reserved for ten students enrolled on the first year of the Master’s Degree programme in European and International Politics. Students interested in undertaking the double degree must submit a declaration of interest to Student Services – Area Carriera within the deadlines for submission of study plans.

MLU-Halle’s educational offering includes both courses delivered in German and in English (as per the titles in the study plan table of the programme: modules in the area of Law are normally in German, those in the area of economics are normally in English).

All students interested in undertaking the programme must meet the compulsory attendance requirement of the Advanced German Language course foreseen by the study plan (during the Foreign Language exam, the examining professor will ascertain whether the language requirement for admission to the course of study in question is met) and to pass the Advanced English Language exam.

Students enrolled on the double degree programme with MLU-Halle are required to accrue 51 credits by July 2025, by completing the following activities:

  • passing the German Language exam (advanced course of 6 credits)
  • passing the English Language exam (advanced course of 6 credits)
  • passing a further 4 exams of 9 credits each
  • attendance of the "Contrastive analysis of cultural and work standards in German-speaking countries" seminar (from 3 credits)

Evaluation of applications will be carried out on the basis of the number of available places, the number of applications and the following criteria:

  • number of exams passed
  • grade point average
  • language proficiency

The panel appointed by the Faculty to draw up the final ranking may also evaluate other factors such as academic resumés, Bachelor Degree results, any time spend abroad, aptitude and motivation.

Should any pre-selected candidates for the double-degree programme not meet the specified requirements by July (credits and German language), they can be accepted into the Exchange ranking for mobility at Halle during the second semester, after checking that places are available. In order to obtain the M.Sc. Europäische und Internationale Wirtschaft students must complete Halle’s study and internship programme.

Exams not taken at MLU-Halle must be substituted by courses from the Master’s Degree programme in European and International Politics, for the equivalent credit total, so that they can obtain the qualification in European and International Politics from the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at Università Cattolica.

* Students who have not already taken the History of International Relations and Institutions exam (Storia delle relazioni e delle istituzioni internazionali) are strongly advised to do so before taking the History of International Treaties and Politics exam (Storia dei trattati e politica internazionale). With this in mind, in this study plan this exam can be replaced by History of International Relations and Institutions (Storia delle relazioni e delle istituzioni internazionali) and History of International Treaties and Politics (Storia dei trattati e politica internazionale) as long as they have not already taken the exam. History of International Treaties and Politics (Storia dei trattati e politica internazionale) may then be included as an elective exam.

** Notwithstanding a student’s right to choose any academic activity as long as it is judged as being in line with the academic programme by the competent faculty bodies, due to the characteristics of the profile in question, it is advisable to agree on an academic activity plan with the German Language professor (advanced course).

Note that, in compliance with Università Cattolica regulations, students who take part in the Double Degree programme are required to take the Theology exams in their study plan.

The programme requires that the thesis theme and title be agreed with a supervisor from Università Cattolica or MLU-Halle. The thesis can be written in Italian, German or English.

During the stay in Germany, students will be assisted by a professor from MLU-Halle in collecting material and preparing the thesis. Students will be responsible for keeping their supervisor informed of the progress in studies and research. The thesis (worth 24 credits) will be discussed at Università Cattolica. The thesis will also be evaluated at Martin Luther Universität according to the procedures established by the University of Halle-Wittenberg.

The discussion at Università Cattolica will take place in one of the three curricular languages of the double degree programme, i.e. Italian, German or English, in agreement with the relevant supervisor. Within the framework of the exchange of teachers between the two universities, the professor assisting in collecting material for the degree at MLU-Halle or their representative will be a member of the Graduation Panel.

At Martin Luther Universität , there is no oral defense of the thesis. The final grade at MLU Halle-Wittenberg is based on the average of the grades assigned by the first supervisor and the second supervisor (co-supervisor) during the evaluation of the written thesis. The evaluations of both examiners are provided in written form and are accessible to graduates according to the regulations of Martin Luther Universität.

At the end of the program, graduates will receive two degrees: one in 'European and International Politics' from Università Cattolica of Milan and one in 'Europäische und Internationale Wirtschaft' from MLU Halle-Wittenberg, each with their respective final grades.

The programme includes a compulsory internship (6 credits) to be undertaken at companies, public or private institutions, university centres or study and research centres.

In line with the current agreements between the two universities, earning the double degree does not involve additional costs over and above the normal university fees at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. Students will be responsible for the following:

  • application fee of €35
  • Studentenwerk membership fee per semester, and public transport season ticket of approximately €250 per semester (Halle will  advise students of the exact amount at final acceptance)
  • travel, board and housing costs
  • students must register (Anmeldung) at the city’s District Office of the city within 15 days of arrival.

Students selected for the programme will be provided with information as to whether EU funds for an Erasmus+ contribution are available.

All participating students will be covered by an insurance policy taken out by the University with Axa.

In addition to this, a "Student Safety Package" will be activated. This package allows for the download of a "Student Safety Check" app which provides for geolocation and immediate communication in an emergency. Further information about how to activate the package will be provided to students selected for the programme.

Università Cattolica will not be able to guarantee the departure of participating students if the international situation or the situation in the destination country does not allow for the period of mobility to be undertaken in safety.
