Procedures and final examination

Linguistic Sciences and Foreign Literatures

Undergraduate Programmes

Students intending to graduate must:

  1. choose a topic, checking the requirements
  2. submit the application for admission to the final examination, verifying the curricular/temporal requirements
  3. deliver the final dissertation in the prescribed manner

Milan Campus
In order to have your thesis or final dissertation assigned, you must participate in the Faculty's online Dissertation Assignment procedure, which is available on Blackboard and scheduled three times a year (rounds) during each of the examination sessions (summer, autumn and extraordinary). This procedure anticipates the registration of the application for admission to the final examination (Undergraduate degree programmes) and the registration of the final examination topic as provided for by the Faculty.

Students who have agreed a topic with the professor must enclose with the procedure a written communication signed by the professor (a copy of an email from the professor's institutional address is also accepted).
To students who do not have a reference professor, the Commission will ex officio assign a professor within the linguistic disciplines.

Information and dates on the Dissertation Assignment procedure are available on Blackboard in the dedicated section; in case of need, please contact attribtesi.facoltalingue@unicatt.it.

Please refer to the Faculty Guide for further details on the final examination.

Brescia Campus
In order to obtain approval for the topic, it is necessary to fill in the form available on the website in the Forms section and submit it for the professor's signature. The topic must be entered on your iCatt personal page (Online registrar > Final examination > Application for graduation). Students in the Faculty of Linguistic Sciences and Foreign Literatures are not required to submit the form to the Student Services Centre of the relevant seat.

Please refer to the Faculty Guide for further details on the final examination.

In order to apply for admission to the final examination, you must comply with:

  • submission deadline: at least 45 days before the session. Details in the calendar of the calls.

  • curricular requirements:
    • having no more than 24 ECTS credits in debt ('Theology' courses and Internship are not included in the count);
    • for the summer session only, for regular (in corso) third-year students, having more than 24 ECTS credits in debt (counting does not include 'Theology' courses and Internship).
      In this case: for students at the Milan campus, it is necessary to report to the Student Services Centre within the deadline for submitting the application for admission to the final examination; for students at the Brescia campus, it is necessary to contact the Student Services Centre via the iCatt Information Request form within the deadline for submitting the application for admission to the final examination.

If the ECTS credits from the internship exceed the number of maximum credits due, you must contact the Student Services Centre of your seat by the deadline for submitting your application for admission to the final examination.

The dedicated function (Online registrar > Final examination > application for graduation) involves the following steps:

  1. completion and forwarding of the application to the professor for approval;
  2. approval or rejection by the professor;
  3. payment of the graduation fee by Pago PA;
  4. submission of the degree application.

Any changes to the title of the final dissertation, approved by the professor, must be made at the time the application is completed. The title contained must therefore be definitive, as no further changes can be accepted.

The .pdf file of the dissertation must be sent to the professor via the iCatt personal page (Online registrar > Final examination > Submit final dissertation). The professor may request a hard copy if necessary.

The dissertation must be submitted via the iCatt personal page no later than 15 days before the start date of the proclamation sessions (see calendar).

The deadline for uploading the dissertation is not to be missed.

Details in the calendar curricular requirements for the summer session: do not have more than 40 CFUs in debt ("Theology" courses and the final exam are not included in the count)
requirements for all other sessions: have no more than 30 CFUs due ("Theology" courses and the final exam are not included in the count).

N.B: The title on the degree application is definitive and therefore no subsequent changes can be accepted.

The dedicated function involves the following steps:

  1. completion and forwarding of the application to the professor for approval;
  2. authorisation or rejection by the lecturer/reference professor;
  3. payment of the degree fee with Pago PA;
  4. submission of the application

Milan Campus
Undergraduate students of the Faculty of Linguistic Sciences and Foreign Literatures at the Milan campus must post the Declaration of Regularity of Fulfilment (Library, EDUCatt) in the special container located outside the green area of the Student Services Centre.

Brescia Campus
No further documentation is required.

Undergraduate students who fail to graduate in the call for which they have applied for admission to the final examination must notify both the professor/supervisor and the Student Services Centre of the relevant seat.
Notification to the Student Services Centre should be made by writing via the iCatt Request for information form under Lessons, Exams and Final Examination > Final Examination.

For a subsequent graduation session, a new application for admission to the final examination must be submitted with a €16 stamp duty and a receipt of payment of the Undergraduate Contribution.

Graduating students will receive the convocation exclusively via their iCattpersonal page approximately 10 days before the scheduled graduation date (Online registrar > Final Examination section).

Students matriculated since a.y. 2018/2019

For those matriculated in undergraduate degree programmes in the a.y. 2018/2019 and onwards, the following criteria will be applied for the calculation of the final mark:

BASIC COUNTING

The average is calculated by evaluating all marks and dividing by the total weight in ECTS credits (weighted average).
The mark 30 cum laude is counted as 31.
Written and oral language examinations (midterm), "Theology", examinations whose marks are expressed by an approval or a pass, are excluded from the count.
A weighted, non-arithmetic average is used for the calculation.
The average in thirtieths thus obtained is converted into 110ths by multiplying the value obtained by 11 and dividing it by 3.

FINAL EXAMINATION MARK 0 to 5 points.

PERFORMANCE BONUS

4 points if the average mark is >= 29;
3 points if the average mark < 29 and >= 28;
2 points if the average mark < 28 and >= 27;
1 point if the average mark < 27 and >= 26.

THEOLOGIES BONUS

2 points if the average mark is >= 28;
1 point if the average mark < 28 and >= 26;

For students enrolled in the first year from the academic year. 2019/ 20:
1.5 point if the average mark is 30 CUM LAUDE;
1 point if the average mark is 30 to 29;
 0.5 point if the average mark is from 28 to 26;
 0 points if the average mark is 25 to 18

Undergraduate degrees programmes DM 270/04 – Students matriculated from a.y. 2004/2005

BASIC COUNTING

All marks from the profit examinations are added up.
The grade 30 cum laude is counted as 33.
The following are excluded from the count: written and oral language examinations (midterm), "Theology", examinations whose grades are expressed as an approval or a pass, the three lowest grades (whatever they may be) divided by the number of examinations taken into account for the calculation of the final average.
In calculating the average, the marks achieved are assessed without distinguishing between semester and annual examinations.
The sum is divided by the number of courses considered (average in thirtieths).
The average in thirtieths thus obtained is converted into 110ths by multiplying the value obtained by 11 and dividing it by 3.

FINAL EXAMINATION MARK 0 to 5 points.

THEOLOGIES BONUS (for students matriculated since 2004/05)

2 points for each examination with a mark >= 28;
1.5 points for each examination with a mark <= 27 and >= 24;
1 point for each examination grade <24

     Undergraduate degree programmes ex DM 509/99 - Matriculated before 2004/2005

BASIC COUNTING

The average of the mark for the written and oral language tests is calculated, rounded up to the next whole number.
The average between the mark thus obtained and the mark for the literature test is then calculated, rounded up to the next whole number: the resulting mark constitutes the official mark for foreign language and literature or foreign language and linguistics.
This calculation is to be carried out for both languages and for the three years, in order to obtain the six marks for the languages.
The final mark is obtained from the sum of the six language marks (calculated according to the above criterion) plus the marks of all the other examinations.
The mark 30 cum laude is counted as 33.
The following are excluded from the count: "Theology" examinations, examinations whose marks are expressed by an approval or a pass, the three minor marks (whatever they may be), any supernumerary examinations; negative marks in written examinations are not counted.
