Procedures and final examination

Linguistic Sciences and Foreign Literatures

Graduate Programmes

Students intending to graduate must:

  1. choose a topic, checking the requirements
  2. submit the application for admission to the final examination, verifying the curricular/temporal requirements
  3. deliver the final dissertation in the prescribed manner

In order to submit the thesis topic approval form, you must comply with:

  • submission deadlines: at least 6 months before the session. Details in the calendar
  • curricular requirements: having completed first-year foreign language examinations.

Milan Campus
In order to have your thesis or final dissertation assigned, you must participate in the Faculty's online Dissertation Assignment procedure, which is available on Blackboard and scheduled three times a year (rounds) during each of the examination sessions (summer, autumn and extraordinary). This procedure anticipates the registration of the application for admission to the final examination (Undergraduate degree programmes) and the registration of the final examination topic as provided for by the Faculty.

Students who have agreed a topic with the professor must enclose with the procedure a written communication signed by the professor (a copy of an email from the professor's institutional address is also accepted).
To students who do not have a reference professor, the Commission will ex officio assign a professor within the linguistic disciplines.
Information and dates on the Dissertation Assignment procedure are available on Blackboard in the dedicated section; in case of need, please contact attribtesi.facoltalingue@unicatt.it.

Please refer to the Faculty Guide Faculty Guide for further details on the final examination.

Brescia Campus
For the Brescia campus, there are no curricular requirements.
The topic of the final examination must be related to a course included in the study plan and the title must be agreed upon with the reference professor. In order to obtain approval of the topic, it is necessary to contact the professor. The topic must then be entered on the iCatt personal page (Online registrar > Final examination) by the deadline indicated in the "Graduate/Specialistica and Four-Year Degree Programme Calls" section of this page.

Please refer to the Faculty Guide Faculty Guide for further details on the final examination.

In order to apply for admission to the final examination, you must comply with:

  • submission deadline: at least 45 days before the session. Details in the calendar of the calls.
  • curricular requirements:
    • graduate/specialista degree programmes:
      • no more than 16 ECTS credits in debt (the 'Theology' course and the Internship are not included in the count).
      • for the summer session only, for regular (in corso) second-year students, having more than 16 ECTS credits in debt (the 'Theology' course and Internship are not included in the count).
In this case: for students at the Milan campus, it is necessary to report to the Student Services Centre within the deadline for submitting the application for admission to the final examination; for students at the Brescia campus, it is necessary to contact the Student Services Centre via the iCatt Request for information form within the deadline for submitting the application for admission to the final examination.
    • four-year degree programmes: no more than 2 years or 4 semesters in debt ('Theology' courses are not included in the count).

If the ECTS credits from the internship exceed the number of maximum credits due, you must contact the Student Services Centre of your seat by the deadline for submitting your application for admission to the final examination.

The dedicated function (Online registrar > Final examination > Application for graduation) involves the following steps:

  • filling in and forwarding the application to the professor for approval;
  • approval or refusal by the professor/lecturer;
  • payment of the graduation fee with Pago PA.

Any changes to the title of the final dissertation, approved by the professor, must be made at the time the application is completed. The title contained must therefore be definitive, as no further changes can be accepted.

The .pdf file of the dissertation must be submitted via the iCatt personal page (Online registrar > Final examination > Submit final dissertation). The professor may request a hard copy if necessary.

Instructions for submitting the dissertation: Submitting the final dissertation

The dissertation must be submitted via the iCatt personal page no later than 10 days before the start date of the proclamation sessions (see calendar). The deadline for submitting the dissertation is not to be missed.

If computer equipment is needed to support the presentation, undergraduate students must submit the Computer Equipment Request Form (if required) to the  Building Supervisory OfficeOffice within 5 days of the date of the discussion of the dissertation

Undergraduate students who fail to graduate in the call for which they have applied for admission to the final examination must notify both the professor/supervisor and the Student Services Centre of the relevant seat.
Notification to the Student Services Centre should be made by writing via the iCatt Request for information form under Lessons, Exams and Final Examination > Final Examination.

For a subsequent graduation session, a new application for admission to the final examination must be submitted with a €16 stamp duty and a receipt of payment of the Undergraduate Contribution.

Graduating students will receive the convocation exclusively via their iCatt personal page approximately 10 days before the scheduled graduation date (Online registrar > Final Examination section).

Graduate degree programme

The following criteria are applied for the calculation of the final mark:

BASIC COUNTING

All marks from the profit examinations are added up.
The mark 30 cum laude is counted as 33.
Intermediate written and oral language examinations, any supernumerary examinations, Theology, examinations whose marks are expressed with an approval or a pass, the worst mark (whichever it is) are excluded from the count.
In calculating the average, the marks achieved are assessed without distinguishing between semester and annual examinations.
Negative marks in the written tests are not taken into account.
The sum is divided by the number of courses considered (average in thirtieths).
The average in thirtieths thus obtained is converted into 110ths by multiplying the value obtained by 11 and dividing it by 3.

FINAL EXAMINATION MARK

0 to 11 points.

Honours are only awarded if students have achieved a score of 110/110

degree programme

The following criteria are applied for the calculation of the final mark:

BASIC COUNTING (students matriculated since a.y. 2005/06).

For both languages, the grade average for the written test and the mark for the 1st year oral test is calculated, rounding up to the next whole number; the grade average thus obtained and the mark for Expressive Language Techniques is then calculated, rounding up to the next whole number. The grade average for the 2nd year written test and the Linguistics of Speciality Languages is also calculated, rounded up to the next whole number (this calculation is to be made for both languages).

All the marks from the other profit examinations are then added together (including any debts).
The mark 30 cum laude is counted as 33.
"Theology" examinations, examinations whose marks are expressed by an approval or a pass, any supernumerary examinations, the worst mark (whatever it may be) are excluded from the count.
In calculating the average, the marks achieved are assessed without distinguishing between semester and annual examinations.
Negative marks in the written tests are not taken into account.
The sum is divided by the number of courses considered (average in thirtieths).
The final average is obtained from the sum of the language averages and the marks for all other examinations, calculated according to the criteria outlined.
The average in thirtieths thus obtained is converted into 110ths by multiplying the value obtained by 11 and dividing it by 3

Four-year degree programme

The following criteria are applied for the calculation of the final mark:

BASIC COUNTING

The average of the mark for the written and oral language tests is calculated, rounded up to the next whole number; the average between the mark thus obtained and the mark for the literature test is then calculated, rounded up to the next whole number.
The resulting mark constitutes the official mark for foreign language and literature (this calculation is made for both languages for the four years).
All the marks of the other profit examinations are then added together.
The mark 30 cum laude is counted as 33.
"Theology" examinations, any supernumerary examinations, the 3 worst marks (whatever they may be) are excluded from the count.
