Cape Town
Framed between oceans and mountains, Caprtown is surrounded by incredible natural beauty, with Table Mountain, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, an absolute highlight. Cape Town is also a place of huge diversity, lively cultures, and a vibrant nightlife. Living here is dynamic and interesting, and weekends will give you a huge variety of exciting activities.
You can, for instance, venture to the top of Table Mountain, go paragliding, take to the ocean by kayak, hang out on some of the many beaches, sip wine at stunning vineyards, head out on safari, enjoy some of Africa’s finest restaurants and even take to the skies on a helicopter flight over the city. For those more interested in exploring South Africa’s culture, how about visiting the historic Robben Island, or taking a free walking tour through the city to learn about Apartheid? Other possible activities include cage-diving with Great white sharks, whale watching, visiting Nelson Mandela’s prison cell, or snorkeling with seals.

Greater Kruger Area
The Greater Kruger Area encompasses over 20 private wildlife reserves on the west side of the world-renowned Kruger National Park in South Africa. These private reserves come together to create one big reserve. A significant contribution to wildlife conservation efforts, helping to protect and preserve one of the world’s last remaining wildlife strongholds.
The whole area comprises almost 5.5 million acres of unfenced land where animals roam freely across wild savannah. The Greater Kruger Area is a major hotspot for wildlife conservation and offers endless opportunities for wildlife encounters with iconic animals such as elephants, lions, rhinos, and wild dogs. Many of these animals are endangered or vulnerable.

Projects

As a volunteer on our Early Childhood Development project, you will work in Cape Town’s underprivileged townships, educating and caring for vulnerable children in foster care homes, preschools and after-school programs.

We partner with preschools caring for children between the ages of 6 months and 7 years. These schools offer children from disadvantaged backgrounds an invaluable head start to their education and future, with a specific emphasis on helping them to prepare for their next step to primary school. Volunteers help the classes come alive, assisting teachers with lesson planning and making real progress for the next step to enter school.

The foster care home where our volunteers work was established to care for abandoned and orphaned children aged between 0 and 8 years in Khayelitsha and the surrounding areas. This region has been hugely affected by HIV, so much so that over 40% of the children admitted to the care home are HIV+. A volunteer’s role is to help implement a fun plan of activities to help the children with their basic development needs, which will enable them to grow and learn. The program works mainly with younger children (0 – 3 years) and covers developmental areas such as social play, gross motor skills, language, numeracy, and rhythm.

Throughout the week, a couple of afternoons are spent at a foster care center for children from various challenging backgrounds. These children live in a network of small family units, with a dedicated foster mother or father and no more than 6 children per household. The aim of the organization is to one day return the children to their biological families, or failing that, with the help of those families and our volunteers, help them lead happy successful lives. Volunteers work regularly with approximately 15-20 children and teenagers, helping them develop life skills that will further their development and improve their chances of completing their education.

At an after-school care program set up to provide a safe space for children in the vulnerable hours after school finishes, volunteers help to plan and implement fun and educational games. These always have an emphasis on developing important life skills, such as teamwork and leadership. Volunteers rotate through activities, so may also be involved in providing homework support, craft-making, gardening, or holding a reading session. Your input and ideas are always welcomed as new inspiration, so this is the perfect place to share any unique skills you have.

Join our expert field guides and wildlife conservation research team. Our most popular volunteer project in Africa and our most remote destination is situated in the untouched African bush. This volunteer program is ideal for wildlife lovers, nature enthusiasts, and aspiring conservationists or zoologists.
Venture into the African bush on daily volunteer safari drives in search of the Big 5 species and other iconic African wildlife. You will monitor wild animals and collect vital data. Your observations and volunteer work are essential for providing critical information that will influence wildlife conservation strategies that protect endangered and vulnerable wildlife in Africa.

Physical conservation work is a vital part of this programs: you assist in getting rid of snares or removing invasive species, the volunteer work you do is key to the survival of wildlife. It transforms the land back into a healthy habitat where wildlife can flourish.

You will help to compile data of the wild animals encountered into reports, maps, and up to date profiles (ID kits). The techniques you will learn about doing this volunteer work include analyzing whisker patterns, scars, and ear notches to understand and distinguish individual animals. These research sessions will teach you about data collection and compilation techniques that are used to influence wildlife conservation strategies. Conservationists and field guides can use this data to monitor the movements and health of wildlife for years to come.

*This project incurs an additional fee: 3 weeks $ 450 | 4 weeks $ 550.

Sports Coaching and Development Volunteering in Cape Town provides much-needed sports coaching to children in Cape Town’s townships. As a volunteer, you’ll help teach physical education sessions and coach children in various sports. Assist coaches in teaching physical education sessions at schools in Khayelitsha and Langa, township areas of Cape Town.

You will also join a Sports Coaching Clinic twice per week to teach rugby to a group of students. These children will also receive academic tutoring and a meal before heading home after a full day. This project has two aims. The first aim is to keep children safe and productively occupied in the hours after school when many of their caretakers are still at work. The second aim is to grow the individual confidence of each child, while adding to the bank of resources the clinic requires in order to function optimally.

These projects are undertaken in collaboration with NGOs and health centres, and are aimed at increasing the quality of health services offered through the public healthcare system. The public healthcare system faces a number of difficulties such as a lack of qualified personnel, and a constantly increasing demand for services. Volunteers will be involved in various tasks such as:

  • Being in attendance with medical staff during medical appointments
  • Being in attendance with nursing staff during daily medical appointments, including assisting with monitoring patients' vital signs
  • Organising therapeutic activities to help in children’s support centre
  • Providing support with administrative tasks.
  • Joining staff for home appointments with patients.

* Irrespective of whether volunteers have experience or qualifications in the healthcare sector, they are not allowed to practice in South Africa. They are not permitted to provide diagnoses, treat patients, perform complex procedures (apart form dressing wounds) or administer injections.

* Volunteers in the healthcare sector must be at least 21 years old.
