Selection for PAX Moot

Applications for 2025/2026 edition are open until 8 June 2025

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is preparing for the selection of students to represent the university at the 2026 edition of PAX Moot, (academic year 2025/20256).

The team will be led by Dr. Daniele Forcella and Dr. Maura Lospalluti. Prof. Pietro Franzina serves as the reference lecturer.

Programme

PAX Moot is an international competition on international law, which involves the simulation of a trial. Over the five months of the competition, students on the programme are called upon to take an active part in regular preparatory meetings, contributing to the work of the team.
PAX Moot provides students with the opportunity to deal with an example of a real case that raises well-structured legal issues via discussion within the team and with teams from universities from other countries. The experience also allows you to improve your skills in legal analysis and argument, as well as to improve your command of English, both written and oral.

Students taking part in PAX Moot are awarded 4 credit points.

How the competition unfolds

PAX Moot begins with the publication of a case in November, and is divided into two phases, one written and one oral. The first phase involves the study of the case and the legal research leading up to writing a deposition. The team will draw up memoranda for both parties in the case, one for the claimant (the plaintiff) and one for the Respondent (the defendant), to be submitted by mid-March (approximately).

Once the written part has been completed, the oral part will be undertaken: oral debate will be held at the venue of the finals, which will be determined in due course by the PAX organizers.

The official PAX Moot website contains a wealth of information about the competition, including the deadlines for the different phases.

For any further information about the competition, please contact Prof. Pietro Franzina (pietro.franzina@unicatt.it) and Dr. Maura Lospalluti (maura.lospalluti1@unicatt.it).

4 students enrolled on the Master’s Degree programme in Law will be selected.

Selection will be based on the applicants’ English level (students are recommended to have a minimum level of B2), academic merit and an aptitude interview conducted partly in English. Preference will be given to applicants who have taken the exams, or at least have attended classes, for the following courses:  Private International Law, Transnational Law and European Union Law (Diritto internazionale privato and Diritto dell’Unione Europea).

To be considered for the selection you must:

  • Apply for the programme by 8 June 2025 (this requires submission of your CV) and pay the application fee
  • Attend an attitude interview, which will be held on 12 June 2025 at 11.30 am. Details on the interview venue will be provided to applicants in the days leading up to the interview.

Taking part in PAX will entail travel, meal, and accommodation expenses related to the final oral phase.

Università Cattolica will reimburse the costs incurred for travel abroad up to a maximum of €350 per person. Reimbursement is subject to the submission of appropriate supporting documentation. The availability of additional financial support from an external sponsor to Università Cattolica will be communicated to the selected participants in the fall.

The info session will be held on May 13, 2025 at 5:00 PM both online and in classroom G.125bis.

Any classroom changes and the link to access remotely will be published on the official Instagram page of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore – PAX Moot Team in the days immediately prior.
