Virtual Programmes

Virtual Study Programmes: an international experience without borders

Virtual study programs offer students the opportunity to enjoy an international academic experience without physically moving abroad. Thanks to digital technologies, it is possible to collaborate with professors and students from partner universities around the world, developing global and intercultural skills.

What are they?

These are online educational activities designed to encourage dialogue and collaboration among students from different countries. They can be integrated into university courses or offered as optional experiences. The goal is to create a global, accessible, and inclusive learning environment.

Why participate?
  • Boost your skills!
Intercultural skills are among the most in-demand in the job market, and improving your language abilities is always an advantage.

  • They are inclusive!
Many students cannot take part in a mobility programme abroad for various reasons (whether financial, family, health etc.). This programme gives everyone the opportunity to undertake an international experience  without the need to go abroad.

  • They prepare you for the future!
If the idea of going abroad feels overwhelming, virtual programmes are a great opportunity to get familiar with new cultures and languages before facing an in-person experience abroad.

  • They are recognised!
Virtual programmes are approved by your Faculty and include the recognition of ECTS credits.

Main types:
  • Virtual Exchange Programmes: broader online programs focused on intercultural dialogue and global citizenship.
  • COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning): integrated course modules with collaborative activities between partner universities.

Virtual Exchange Programmes

Virtual Exchange programmes consist of online sessions that promote communication and constructive interactions, supported by technology and facilitated by educators, bringing together students from various countries around the world.

The Virtual Exchange methodology has proven effective as a synergistic and complementary component to physical exchanges, enabling more students to benefit from meaningful international and intercultural experiences as part of their education.

COIL: Collaborative Online International Learning

With COIL, you can take part in a virtual exchange with students from all over the world, enjoy a meaningful intercultural experience within your study programme, and request credit recognition.

COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) is a model of international academic collaboration that involves the co-designing and co-teaching (collaboration) of teaching modules by two or more professors from universities in different countries (international). Students take part in synchronous and/or asynchronous online activities (online), working in international teams on shared projects. COIL is integrated into curricular courses (learning) and aims to develop intercultural, digital, and disciplinary skills without the need for physical mobility.
