Bangkok

Bangkok is a city unlike any other. As one of the largest metropolitan areas in Asia, Bangkok is a bustling, thriving city that pulses with the everyday energy of millions of people who call it home and the equally large population of international visitors. To live in Bangkok is to truly be at the heart of the action and to get a sense of the world coming together to work, play, and exchange ideas.

Koh Samui

Situated at the heart of Southeast Asia and bordered by Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia, Thailand boasts a unique cultural identity. Proudly known as "The Land of the Free," it is the only Southeast Asian country to have escaped colonization by European powers. Many tourists also refer to it as "The Land of Smiles" because of its welcoming and friendly people. Specifically, Koh Samui is a traveler’s paradise that caters to various interests and preferences. As an idyllic island in the Gulf of Thailand, it is renowned for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and lush tropical landscapes. It stands out from other places in Thailand due to its unique combination of island lifestyle, natural beauty, and laid-back atmosphere. Living in Koh Samui offers a unique blend of tranquility, natural beauty, and a laid-back lifestyle. Unlike other locations in Thailand, indeed, Koh Samui offers a more relaxed, resort-like environment. The pace of life is slower, with a focus on leisure and outdoor activities, making it a popular destination for those seeking relaxation.

Projects

Bangkok

Volunteer at a local school serving children from 3 to 12 years old. The school is short of English-speaking teachers, so your assistance with teaching English will be very appreciated. You can also teach arts, music, dancing, and sports. You can also help teach English to the teachers and staff, as well as host an after-school English club for any interested students.

Another option is for you to volunteer at a local nursery that looks after children from 3 to 5 years old while their parents are at work. Volunteers assist in looking after the children, playing games, teaching English, serving meals, and assisting with creative activities like making puppets or arts and crafts projects.

Koh Samui

The program allows participants to teach students aged 6 to 18, with a typical day consisting of several classes and lesson planning. It offers diverse teaching opportunities across various subjects like English, math, science, and sports, aiming to improve English skills for rural Thai children, and promote community engagement through special classes and camps.
Participants will use creative methods and prepare lesson plans with local coordinators. Volunteers can experience a 10 to 45-minute commute to school while developing teamwork and gaining practical teaching experience.

Otherwise, you can assist with early childhood education for children aged 2 to 5 - an area increasingly important due to government efforts to improve educational access. The first five years are crucial for development, and many local facilities face teacher shortages, leading to overcrowded classrooms. You will play an essential role in assisting local educators and providing support in the classroom. By incorporating songs, dances, games, and repetition exercises, you will utilize your creative skills to help young children learn, practice, and enjoy their first experiences with fundamental educational concepts. You will also supervise meals, engage in play, plan activities, assist with cleaning, and help with basic hygiene and caregiving tasks for the children. Your assistance will enable local Thai teachers to introduce English to young children, helping them understand various accents, improve their learning, and build confidence in interacting with people from around the world.

Volunteers will work in reduce-reuse-recycle and upcycling programs, campaigns for plastic garbage separation in many areas, up-cycling plastic innovation projects, and other campaigns for environmental management. As part of these programs, volunteers may visit local schools and create educational activities to provide information about environmental conservation, and assist with reforestation measures.

Wildlife Conservation volunteers in Bangkok can join the work of various NGOs that promote public awareness for animals' needs and rights, and care for stray and abused animals. Volunteers assist with administrative activities and join the team for field work, helping animals and visiting schools to promote their animal campaigns.

Koh Samui

This project takes place at an elephant conservation center, which serves as a sanctuary for rescued, abused elephants and orphaned elephants that have led difficult lives in the logging industry. The center provides love, care, food and safety in a natural environment with the goal of rehabilitating them and eventually returning them to the wild when they are ready. Sadly, many elephants face abuse, poaching, deforestation, and loss of habitat, which has led to a sharp decline in their numbers. Today, Asian elephants are an endangered species.

By joining the Elephant Care Program, you’ll not only support the elephants' well-being and future viability of the species, but also learn a lot about their care. For example, did you know that elephants need to spend 12 to 18 hours per day eating just to maintain their mass?! Because of their need to spend most of the day eating, they only sleep for between 2 and 4 hours per day.

If an elephant is working for humans in the logging industry or tourism, for example, they truly do not have enough time to consume the nutrition they need to support their bodies, leaving them weak and vulnerable to illness and injury. Volunteer responsibilities typically include:

  • Cleaning the elephant habitat, ensuring they have clean water, and assisting with repairs or construction
  • Learning about Thai herbal medicine and its role in elephant care
  • Helping bath the elephants, observing their eating habits and behavior to monitor their overall health
  • Preparing food for the elephants and assisting in purchasing items from the market
  • Planting, watering, and maintaining the elephant food area by growing grass, vegetables, bananas, pumpkins, squash, cucumbers, or other plants that elephants enjoy.

Bangkok

Volunteer with an organization that aims to support women who have been victims of various cases by providing shelter, care, job training and education. Volunteers assist the social workers in giving support and caring for the women, looking after their children, and assisting with job training workshops.

Another possible project is with a local community organization providing support for migrants from other provinces that has set up a free nursery for children from 3 to 5 years old. Volunteers assist in looking after the children, playing games, teaching English, serving meals, arranging creative projects, and teaching English to the staff. Volunteers can also assist with community activities, like planting trees.

Koh Samui

By joining the Koh Samui Community Renovation Program, you will help revitalize local schools and temples, leaving a lasting impact on the community. You will be assigned various tasks, ranging from simple activities like painting, mixing cement, and cleaning, to more complex jobs such as plastering and roofing repair.

The project coordinator, who has extensive construction experience, will supervise and train participants to ensure all procedures are safe. A key focus of your work will be renovating schools, as education is essential for a thriving community. By improving school facilities—whether through painting classrooms, repairing desks, or landscaping— you can help create better learning environments for future generations. Additionally, you might also work on revitalizing temples, which are culturally and spiritually significant to the local community.

By preserving and enhancing these sacred sites, you can honor traditions and strengthen the cultural heritage of the community. Working alongside locals toward a common goal is a fulfilling experience, allowing you to learn about Thai culture and their dedication to the community, creating opportunities for cultural exchange while you lend a helping hand.

Volunteer with a health center in Bangkok. Previous volunteers have helped in the outpatient department, assisting with patient vital signs. Other volunteers have assisted with community visits with the mobile health unit, visiting people in various communities conducting physical health exams, eye exams, consultations, and providing vaccinations. Volunteers may also join home visits and/or school visits to provide health education and health screenings at local schools.

Volunteers may also have the opportunity to learn about traditional Thai medicine through an organized educational visit to such a facility, which can be arranged at an additional charge
