Zanzibar is a tropical island located off the coast of Tanzania, rich in culture and history, and home to some of the most beautiful beaches in East Africa.

The main urban centre is Stone Town, whose rich architectural heritage has earned it recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Projects take place mainly in two areas of the island: near the picturesque fishing village of Jambiani, on the southeastern coast, an area renowned for its white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and the authentic atmosphere of local life; and in Chukwani, a peaceful and green area located just a short distance from Stone Town. While close to the island’s cultural and commercial center, Chukwani retains the charm of a coastal village — ideal for those looking to disconnect, experience sustainable travel, make a lasting impact within local communities, and fully immerse themselves in the vibrant life and colors of Zanzibar.

Jambiani

Volunteers will stay in a modern beachfront guesthouse located about an hour and a half from the airport. The building offers shared, gender-specific rooms with up to four people per room. Each room is equipped with bunk beds, a private bathroom, bed linens, mosquito nets, a ceiling fan, and air conditioning to ensure a comfortable stay.

The property also features a swimming pool, communal areas, a dedicated project room, and shared workspaces, providing plenty of opportunities for volunteers to socialize and collaborate.

Free Wi-Fi is available, though it can be slow or unstable at times. Volunteers are advised to bring a power bank to keep their devices charged and, if needed, purchase a local SIM card for mobile data and calls.

Three meals a day are provided from Monday to Friday, prepared with fresh, local ingredients. On weekends, volunteers have the opportunity to explore the area’s lively markets and restaurants. Once a week, they can also enjoy a traditional dinner with a local family, experiencing authentic Zanzibari home cooking.

Chukwani

Volunteers will stay in a traditional and welcoming guesthouse in Chukwani, designed to foster a convivial and community-oriented atmosphere.

The rooms, shared between 2 and 8 people of the same gender, are equipped with comfortable beds and shared bathrooms. Bed linen and drinking water are included; a laundry service is available at an additional cost.
The facility also has a fully equipped kitchen and a common lounge area where volunteers can relax and socialise.

Wi-Fi is not available, but it is possible to purchase local SIM cards nearby to access the Internet.

All meals are included and offer an authentic taste of Zanzibari cuisine, with typical dishes such as wali (rice), ugali (maize porridge), nyama choma (grilled meat), samaki (fish), pilau, and biriyani. Once a week, volunteers take part in planning the menu, contributing to meal preparation and community life.

There are 100 scholarships of €450 available.

The costs vary depending on the duration of the volunteer project.

Available projects

Projects in collaboration with local schools and community centres, dedicated to providing educational support to children, young people, and women in the vibrant rural communities of the village of Jambiani, where access to quality education is often limited.

The activities include:

  • Supporting local teachers in English lessons and preschool activities, such as educational games, art workshops, and basic motor skills exercises, to encourage children’s cognitive and creative development and prepare them for primary school.
  • English lessons for adults, aimed at young people and women in the community, to improve language skills and enhance access to employment opportunities in the tourism sector, while also promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality.
  • Active community involvement, participating in the improvement of school facilities and the creation of welcoming learning spaces. Volunteers experience an immersive stay, learning Swahili, sharing moments with local families, and discovering the culture and natural beauty of Zanzibar — from beaches and forests to coastal villages.

Through this project, volunteers make a tangible contribution to the educational and social growth of the community, while enjoying an authentic and transformative experience within a warm, welcoming environment rich in cultural exchange.

Projects in collaboration with schools of various levels, including adult education centers, aimed at improving the quality of education and promoting inclusion within local communities.

Activities include:

  • Assisting local teachers in lessons for children, youth, and women from the community, mainly in subjects such as English, Math, and Science. Volunteers help create a supportive and engaging learning environment, often working in primary and secondary schools located in rural areas of the island;
  • Organizing interactive educational games, creative workshops, and sports activities for children aged 5 to 14, encouraging participation and developing language, social, and artistic skills through fun and dynamic teaching methods;
  • Taking part in evening classes at a community center for students aged 4 to 20, held three evenings a week. These sessions provide valuable opportunities for cultural exchange, allowing volunteers to share aspects of their own culture and introduce new educational resources from their home countries;
  • Supporting the development of educational facilities, helping improve school spaces and materials to create a more welcoming and effective learning environment.

Through their commitment, volunteers help broaden students’ perspectives, offering them new opportunities for growth, while gaining valuable experience in teaching, cross-cultural communication, and community engagement.

Projects focused on dolphin protection and marine ecosystem conservation in Zanzibar, combining research, community engagement, and sustainable tourism initiatives that benefit both wildlife and local communities.

Activities include:

  • Observing and monitoring dolphins in their natural habitat through daily boat trips and snorkeling expeditions in the Kizimkazi area, collecting data on their movements, behavior, and interactions, as well as assessing the impact of tourism on their wellbeing;
  • Conducting marine research, such as coral reef surveys, recording local fishing activities, and tracking migratory species like humpback whales, supporting scientific studies and ethical eco-tourism practices;
  • Raising environmental awareness, by engaging with tourists, teaching local schoolchildren about marine life, and organizing educational activities that inspire conservation and sustainability.

This project offers volunteers the chance to experience the beauty of Zanzibar’s marine world while making a lasting contribution to the protection of dolphins, coral reefs, and the livelihoods of the island’s coastal communities.
